Because of a scheduling conflict, the May CivicsNJ Exchange was held on June 3. It was hosted by two members of the coalition, Eric Kipnis and Fran MacCarrigan, experts in youth voting. As John Lewis stated, ‘The vote is precious’ and as we know, critical to the functioning of a democracy. A healthy democracy requires all of us to stay informed and get involved.

Eric and Fran reminded us that voting isn’t just about elections; it’s an expression and tool of civic engagement on a continuum of numerous civic learning and engagement opportunities. It’s an empowering activity that benefits not just individuals, but entire communities at the local, state, county and national levels.

Youth in New Jersey tends to feel disengaged and sometimes intimidated by the voting process. Through voter simulation, their confidence and comfort level with voting is raised.
