The Future of Civics - March 11, 2026

As part of National Civic Learning Week 2026, CivicsNJ convened civic leaders from across the state at Rutgers University–Camden for “The Future of Civics – Celebrating America @250 and Our Commitment to Civic Learning and Engagement in New Jersey.”

The event brought together educators, policymakers, researchers, students, and community leaders to celebrate progress in civic education while advancing a forward-looking vision for civic readiness across New Jersey.

Highlights from the Day:

  • Dr. Dale G. Caldwell, New Jersey’s 4th Lieutenant Governor and 35th Secretary of State, spoke on the importance of civic education and shared nonpartisan efforts underway to ensure residents understand their rights and feel empowered to participate in civic life, emphasizing the long-term impact on the state’s future.
  • Dr. Jane Kamensky, President and CEO of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, delivered the keynote address: Looking Back to Look Forward: The Civics Work of Anniversaries.
  • High school and college students, including those from Rutgers University–Camden, were recognized throughout the day for their leadership and active involvement in civic engagement initiatives.
  • Camden-based artist Erik James Montgomery and the Erik James Montgomery Foundation were highlighted for their free after-school photography program for Camden high school students. The program teaches both the art and business of photography, with student work often exploring civic themes through visual storytelling and personal perspectives on community and engagement.
