Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.

About Us

Our Mission

CivicsNJ channels and unifies the efforts of organizations and individuals to strengthen democracy and empower young people as stewards of change in their communities, the state, and the nation. The Coalition supports the development of consistent and robust civic learning and engagement opportunities for all New Jerseyans.

Our Vision

We envision a vibrant democracy that draws its strength from informed, motivated and engaged young people supported by a diverse network of organizations and individuals.

A healthy democracy is an active one, and we’re doing our part to show New Jersey how to get more involved.

Civics in america

Despite the importance of civic engagement, evidence has shown that the US is not effectively educating and engaging young people in civics.

According to the Nation’s Report Card, Civics and U.S. History scores are at all time lows. For more resources on the state of U.S. civic learning, visit this link

Since 2021, 30 states have adopted measures to strengthen K-12 civic education, including New Jersey.

CivicsNJ is proud to be part of the CivXNow coalition, a national cross-partisan coalition of over 360 organizations focused on improving our nation’s K-12 in and out-of-school civic education.
